  • PSHE (Personal, Social & Health Education including RSE - Relationships & Sex Education)

At Great Bentley, we use the 'Jigsaw' programme resources to help teach our children about all the areas of PSHE.

Our PSHE curriculum is organised into six themed units ('Puzzles'), each taught for approximately half a term:

    Being Me in my World
    Celebrating Difference
    Dreams & Goals
    Healthy Me
    Relationships
    Changing Me

Jigsaw is more than a scheme of work for PSHE. It promotes a whole school philosophy with children & young people at its heart, which nurtures the positive & inclusive culture of the whole school community.

Jigsaw PSHE is fully compliant with the DfE Statutory Relationships & Health Education Guidance 2025.

Our programme and policy has been updated in 2026 to include the latest content and recommendations.

Please read the documents below to find out more and speak to your child's class teacher if you have any queries about the programme and what your child will be learning.

At Great Bentley Primary School, we work closely with parents to ensure  we are transparent about what is taught in our PSHE lessons.

    Statutory requirements

Relationships Education and Health Education became statutory in all primary schools in September 2020, as outlined in the DfE's statutory guidance for Relationships, Sex and Health Education. Updated guidance was published in 2025 and is statutory from September 2026. Our school has implemented the new guidance from April 2026.

These subjects are a statutory entitlement for all children. This means that whilst we highly value parental views and take these into account when planning and reviewing our curriculum, parents cannot withdraw children from Relationships or Health Education content.

However, parents do retain the right to request withdrawal from specific non-statutory Sex Education lessons. Please see the information leaflet below and our updated policy:-
